Breaking out of the Brain

By Benny Richards

I'm fundraising for...

My name is Ben, I’m 30 yrs old with a dream to complete the Finke Desert race by 30. I’ve signed up to complete the Finke with hopes I make it there and back (just in time, before my 31st birthday). I have a racing history, competing in over 150 MA recognised events across New South Whales.

My first Motorcycling Australia senior national licence was granted in January 2012. With my last race being on the 27 February 2021, where my licence was medically suspended after an off. Breaking 5 ribs, a pneumothorax with fluid on the left lung and breaking my collar bone.
At 16 while competing in the South Coast Cup I had an extreme crash, breaking both my arms, having two subdural hematomas (bleed on the brain) and being flown from Bega to Canberra hospital for a 3 week stay.

The mental restraint preparing to take the track again and show my son anyone can overcome adversity. The biggest hurdle I’ll need to overcome to get me to the Finke and Back is getting out of my own head and gaining the bike confidence for the second time.

Having personally received mental health support to overcome my life hurdles, I’d like to give back.

To support mental health, I'm raising funds for TIACS “Breaking out of the Brain” aiming to raise $45,200 for TradeMutt, TIACS mental health services while I prep and train to complete the Finke Desert race. $45,200 is the target in representation of the 226 kms each way to complete the Finke Desert Race.
